Artists Page - Dorothy Whitaker
A native of Jackson Mississippi, Reverend Dorothy Ruth G. Whitaker says, "It is a place where my roots and branches ever thrive (for you know what they say: 'You can take the girl out of the county, but you can't take the country out of the girl;' so, I'm proud of my birthplace.)" Of all eleven siblings, Dot is the seventh child of Marie and Cornelious Green, Sr.
She received her formal education in the Hinds County Public Schools system and a B. S. Degree from Jackson State University. She has also attended seminaries in the Denver area.
Being a "victor" of cancer in 1994, she feels blessed to celebrate 51 years of life in 2004. She is the wife of Clinton A. Whitaker for 25 years, and mother of five: birthing two and three by marriage. Giving praise to the Lord, she is grandmother of eight!
In August, 2004, she received the first ordination of Itinerant Deacon in the African Methodist Episcopal Church. "I'm presently in school studying toward the second ordination of Itinerant Elder," she adds.
We met Rev. Whitaker several years ago in church, of course. A long-time member of the Jordan A.M.E. Inspirational choir, she is codirector and a very talented soprano.
